The 4th of July is the quintessential American holiday, a celebration of freedom and independence marked by fireworks, family, friends, and of course, BBQs. If you’re hosting a 4th of July BBQ this year, you want it to be perfect! From selecting the right grill and grilling techniques to creating a beautiful garden setting, here’s a comprehensive guide to ensure your BBQ is the best on the block.

Planning Your BBQ
Menu Planning
Start by planning your menu well in advance. Decide on the main dishes, sides, beverages, and desserts. Popular BBQ choices include burgers, hot dogs, ribs, chicken, and vegetarian options like grilled vegetables or plant-based burgers.
Grill Preparation and Tips
Do You Have the Right Grill?
Charcoal Grills: Known for imparting a smoky flavor, charcoal grills are great for traditional BBQ tastes. They can be a bit more challenging to control temperature-wise but offer a unique taste.
Gas Grills: These are easier to use and control, providing consistent heat. They’re great for quick and efficient cooking.
Electric Grills: Ideal for those who live in apartments or areas with restrictions on open flames, electric grills are convenient but might lack the deep flavor of charcoal or gas grills.

Basic Grill Maintenance
Be sure to clean your grill before and after use. A clean grill is essential for both safety and taste. Scrub the grates with a grill brush to remove any old food particles.
Check the gas levels! If you are using a gas grill, ensure your propane tank is full. Nothing spoils a BBQ like running out of fuel halfway through cooking… trust us. Speed things up by preheating your grill for about 15-20 minutes before cooking. This helps to sear the meat, locking in juices and flavors.
Grilling Techniques
Direct vs. Indirect Heat: Use direct heat for smaller, quicker-cooking items like burgers and hot dogs. Use indirect heat for larger cuts of meat like ribs or whole chickens.
Avoid Overcrowding: Give your food enough space to cook evenly. Overcrowding can lead to uneven cooking and can lower the grill temperature.
Use a Meat Thermometer: Last but definitely not least use a meat thermometer to ensure food safety and to be sure that your meat is fully cooked. Poultry should reach an internal temperature of 165°F, while beef and pork should be at 145°F for medium-rare.

Our Favorite Flavoring Tips
One way to enhance the flavor of your meats is by using marinades and rubs. Marinate meats for several hours, or overnight, for the best results.
For charcoal and gas grills, consider using wood chips to add a smoky flavor. Soak the chips in water for at least 30 minutes before placing them on the coals or in a smoker box.
Garden Preparation and Tips
Are you hosting this year’s BBQ in your backyard? Set the scene! A beautiful garden setting can elevate your BBQ experience. Here’s how to prepare your garden to impress your guests:
Lawn Care
Mow the Lawn: This one goes without saying, but a freshly mowed lawn always looks tidy and inviting. Mow a few days before the holiday (this weekend is perfect!) to avoid any allergens settling on the grass on the 4th.
Edge the Lawn: Take your lawn prep a step further by edging your lawn. Edging gives your lawn a crisp, clean look, making your garden look well-maintained.

Gardening and Plant Care
Weed Your Garden: Remove weeds from your garden to make your garden beds look neat and to ensure your plants have room to grow.
Watering: Water your plants early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid evaporation and to keep your garden looking lush.
Mulching: Apply mulch to your garden beds to retain moisture, reduce weeds, and give a polished look before the guests arrive! Mulching is an easy last-minute step that will really breathe life into your yard.
Decorative Touches
Flower Arrangements: Add pops of color to your yard with fresh flower arrangements. Choose red, white, and blue flowers to match the 4th of July theme. We have a wide range of flower options available at Agway that are sure to fit the occasion!
String Lights: Hang string lights or fairy lights around your garden and seating area to create a warm and inviting atmosphere as the sun sets.
Outdoor Furniture: Ensure you have enough seating for your guests. Clean and arrange your outdoor furniture to make comfortable lounging areas. This is a general hosting tip to live by. It’s important for each guest to be wanted and included in the event and this starts with having enough seating options.
Food and Beverage Preparation
It’s time to address the elephant in the room. What are we going to eat?!

BBQ Main Dishes
Burgers and Hot Dogs: Classic BBQ staples. Offer a variety of toppings like lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, cheese, and condiments.

What’s on the Side?
Potato Salad: A creamy, tangy potato salad is a BBQ favorite. Pro tip: make this dish a day ahead to let the flavors meld together before serving.
Coleslaw: Crisp and refreshing, coleslaw is a perfect side dish. You can make it with a vinegar-based or make it with a creamy dressing.
Corn on the Cob: If you’re not having corn on the cob at your 4th of July BBQ, what are you doing? Grill corn on the cob directly on the grill for a smoky flavor. Serve with butter, salt, and a sprinkle of chili powder or cheese.
Beverages
For some, this may be the most important part of the BBQ!

Entertainment and Activities
How will you engage your guests and keep them entertained throughout the evening?
Music
Create a playlist of upbeat, festive songs to set the mood. Consider a mix of classic rock, country, and pop hits. Below are some of our favorite playlist options for the holiday!
Games
Cornhole: A classic backyard game that’s easy to set up and play. Odds are, you’ve played this one before!
Horseshoes: Another traditional game that’s fun for all ages.
Water Games: If you have kids attending, set up water balloons or a small inflatable pool to keep them entertained.
4th of July Fireworks
If local regulations allow, plan to visit a fireworks display or create your own. Always prioritize safety and have a bucket of water or hose nearby. —We just hosted vet tech Lauren at our Dennis location where she gave us countless tips and tricks on how to keep our pets calm and safe during the fireworks of the Fourth of July. It’s such a fun summer holiday for us humans, but we know how stressful it can be for our pets.
Grill Safety
Never leave the grill unattended while it’s in use, especially if there are kids or pets around! Position your grill away from your house, deck railings, and overhanging branches to avoid unintentionally spreading heat to another surface! On that subject, make sure you a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergencies.

Don’t forget your sunscreen and insect repellent spray, especially if you know you have bugs in your yard. There’s nothing worse than attending a BBQ and being eaten alive by insects with no repellent options to keep them at bay.
Post-BBQ Cleanup
Clean the grill with a specialized grill cleaner to avoid damage to your grill or any leftover chemicals and particles. Cleaning your grill with the right type of cleaner will prolong the life of your grill and keep it in top shape. If your lawn took a beating during the BBQ, water it thoroughly the next day to help it recover.
