Adopt a Shelter Pet Day

National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day

April 30th is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day and here at Agway of Cape Cod, it’s one of our favorites! The holiday aims to raise awareness of the millions of animals around the United States who are hoping to find a loving home. These pets not only want to find a loving home, but they need to find a loving home. We are proud to be bringing light to this holiday by encouraging families to visit their local shelter.

Keep an Open Mind, But Know What You’re Looking For

Many pet owners, especially first-timers, don’t necessarily know what they are looking for in a new pet. It’s very important to have a few personal guidelines set in stone before making the trip to the local shelter. Think about what type of animal, breed (shedding and non-shedding), and energy level would work best for your lifestyle. Adopt a Shelter Pet Day We suggest that pet owners keep an open mind when it comes to age of their potential new rescue pet. According to the American Humane Society, pets over the age of six are often overlooked in shelters. Older pets can be great companions for those who are looking for lower energy levels, or less of a time commitment. Animals of all ages deserve a second chance with a loving family. Prepare For Your New Family Member

Do you have everything you need for the arrival of your newest furry (or not furry) family member? Visit any of our locations to stock up on collars, leashes, food, treats, toys, beds, and more! The animal that you rescue will be going through an exciting, but very dramatic, transition once they leave the shelter. It’s important that you have everything that your new animal may need for their daily necessities. If you have never owned a pet before, research online to find out the best tactics for how to provide your specific animal with the lifestyle that they require. Not all pets require the same amount of attention or activity!

Save A Life

Rescuing a shelter pet really does lives. By rescuing a shelter animal, you’re providing that animal with a second change in a loving home, where they may have otherwise been euthanized due to overcrowding, or homeless in some cases. Once an animal is rescued from a shelter, more space is freed up to welcome other animals who are in need of help. There are also many owners who say that their rescue animal saved their life just as much as they saved their animal’s life. Have you ever heard the phrase, who rescued who? This phrase rings true in countless rescue situations because pets are such a loving addition to any family, regardless of where they come from. Adopt a Shelter Pet Day In light of National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day, we strongly encourage you to visit your local shelter this spring/summer when looking for the newest addition to your family. There are millions of animals around the country who are waiting in shelters to find their best match. Please reach out to our team at Agway if you have any questions and we will be happy to help!
